  • It’s always good to start something new with an open mind. But this can feel…complicated when you’ve had a bad hair experience in the past — we get it. It’s like going on a first date after a really horrible breakup. If you've gone through lots of ups and downs in your curly hair journey, you don’t need a hair stylist. You need a hair doctor. Someone who can assess all of your hair history: color problems, texture issues, moisture deficiencies, product nightmares, cut and styling fiascoes. You can expect some questions and some curl analysis as your “hair doctor” learns about your curls.

We won’t have all the answers right away, but we’ll have a good start together. Expect your first visit to take a little longer so we can plan and map out a blueprint just for you.

  • You and your curls are a good start.

For your first visit, I recommend bringing along some of your own research…pictures, potential product lists, and of course — lots of questions!

I also recommend coming with dry hair on a day one or two wash, if possible.

  • DevaCurl is a product line and technique company specializing in curly hair. One of the biggest issues curly girls have is when their curls look “uneven.” It can be crazy-challenging for stylists to master…this is because we usually have more than one curly texture going on at the same time

DevaCurl is a patented, dry cutting technique that tackles different curl patterns, bringing connection, movement, and balance to each coil and bounce.

  • Ouidad is a product line and technique company that has pioneered the way in specializing customized, curly hair products, and innovative ways of cutting textured hair. Since the 1980’s, Ouidad has established their name in the curly girl world, creating the “Carve and Slice Technique.” If you have ever struggled with your hair looking like a “pyramid” or a “mushroom,” or have felt like you “have too much hair,” then Ouidad might just be the technique for you!

If you feel like your hair's “too thin” and Ouidad won’t work for you? Think again…everyone’s hair has some bend, so Ouidad is truly for all hair types!

  • This is our top-tier, all-inclusive cut. Incorporating Deva, Ouidad, and other techniques, the GEM Curly Cut brings together all the expertise and knowledge of your stylist into one fabulous cut. The cut matters — and this one creates natural, effortlessly sculpted waves and curls that you style with ease. Designed for high density to low density curls, the GEM Curly Cut can also be used on straight hair! This cut also comes with a hands on class and curls training.

  • Is the sky blue? Are diamonds fabulous? Do men and children have hair? Yes, yes, and yes! I love helping all of my customers…men and children, too! Since men and children typically have shorter hair (and lighter curl density) the GEM Curly Upkeep is typically the best cut for them. If you have questions, or feel that your child needs the GEM Curly Cut, please feel free to reach out directly.

  • Absolutely! Ethnic/tight curls have a unique texture…and an extra degree of fabulousness. GEM Curls has developed a special passion for ethnic curls. To map out a new guest formcomplimentary, in-person consolation, please fill out our new guest form so we can create a plan together.

  • I purposefully use techniques that allow each curl fall just right, no matter what state it’s in. That means curly or straight, I cut your hair to do what you want it to do. However, if you go home to straighten your hair and it’s not quite right, let me know within a week of your appointment and I’ll gladly fix it.

  • Well, here’s the thing. Everyone’s hair has texture. (Even Silky Straight Hair Kimberly from high school homeroom.) Your hair just has some extra textures going on.

Here’s the other thing. A wave is a curl lacking accentuation. Frizz is a curl lacking moisture. Both need some love. And that’s why I’m here! You may *not* have Shirley Temple ringlets, but there’s probably more curl in there than you realize. Still not sure you want to commit to a curly cut? Book a complimentary consultation or, even better — a curly wash and style!

  • If you have shorter hair, you typically can go seven to eight weeks between cuts.

If you have longer hair, you can go three to nine months between cuts. (However if you really want to maintain your cut, I suggest coming back in between three to four months…any appointment over 14 weeks would be considered a full haircut price rather than an upkeep cut.)
